Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS) is a treatment used to manage chronic pain in the back, legs, or arms when other therapies, like medications, injections, or surgery, haven’t provided adequate relief. It’s commonly used for conditions like failed back surgery syndrome, sciatica, and complex regional pain syndrome. The procedure involves implanting a small device under the skin, which sends mild electrical pulses to the spinal cord. These pulses interfere with the pain signals traveling to your brain, reducing the sensation of pain. Instead of feeling pain, patients may experience a tingling sensation, or in some cases, no sensation at all, but with significant pain relief. SCS is typically recommended after a trial period where a temporary device is used to see if it successfully reduces pain. If the trial is effective, a permanent stimulator is implanted. Spinal cord stimulation doesn’t cure the underlying condition, but it can help manage chronic pain and improve quality of life.
