Transforaminal Epidural Steroid Injections (TFESIs) are a specialized type of injection used to relieve pain from conditions like herniated discs, spinal stenosis, or sciatica. These conditions often cause nerve irritation, leading to pain that can radiate down your arms or legs. Unlike traditional epidural injections, the transforaminal approach targets the area where the nerve exits the spine (the foramen). A steroid and, sometimes, a numbing agent are injected directly near the irritated nerve to reduce inflammation and ease the pressure causing your pain. This treatment is typically used when other methods, like physical therapy or medications, haven’t provided enough relief. TFESIs can provide lasting pain relief for weeks or months, depending on your condition, and may help improve mobility and quality of life.
