Sympathetic Nerve Blocks

Sympathetic Nerve Blocks

Project Description

Sympathetic Nerve Blocks are a type of pain management procedure used to diagnose and treat pain conditions related to the sympathetic nervous system. These blocks are often utilized for conditions like complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), phantom limb pain, or certain types of chronic pain that have not responded to other treatments. During the procedure, a healthcare provider injects a local anesthetic and, in some cases, a steroid near the sympathetic nerves, typically in the neck or lower back. This injection can help interrupt pain signals, providing temporary pain relief and potentially improving blood flow to the affected area. The sympathetic nerve block can also serve a diagnostic purpose; if the injection significantly reduces pain, it may indicate that the sympathetic nerves are involved in the pain condition. The effects of the block can last from several hours to weeks, and if successful, patients may consider additional treatments, such as radiofrequency ablation, for longer-term relief.
