What Are Minimally Invasive Spine Procedures?

Minimally Invasive Spine Procedures involve the use of small incisions, image guidance, and specialized tools to access and treat the spine with minimal disruption to surrounding tissues. These techniques reduce trauma, speed up recovery, and lower the risk of complications. They are ideal for patients with spine-related pain who haven’t responded to conservative treatments like medications, physical therapy, or injections, but want to avoid major surgery.

The cutting-edge procedures are recommended when more conservative treatments do not provide lasting relief. They relieve pressure or inflammation causing your pain and may prevent or prolong the need for more invasive surgeries.

Minimally Invasive Spine Procedures are commonly used to treat conditions like:

  • Spinal Stenosis
  • Degenerative Disc Disease
  • Herniated Discs
  • Facet Joint Pain
  • Sacroiliac (SI) Joint Dysfunction
  • Chronic Low Back Pain
  • Post-Surgical Spine Pain (Failed Back Surgery Syndrome)

Our Treatment Offering

Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)

Radiofrequency ablation is a procedure that uses heat generated by radio waves to target and disable nerves responsible for sending pain signals from the spine. RFA is often used for chronic pain in the neck, mid-back, or lower back.

The physician uses fluoroscopy (X-ray guidance) to place a specialized needle near the affected nerve. A small electrical current tests the nerve’s involvement in your pain. Then, heat is applied to interrupt the nerve’s ability to send pain signals. The procedure takes about 30 minutes.

Minimal downtime. Relief may begin within 1–3 weeks and last from six months to over a year.

Minimally Invasive Lumbar Decompression (MILD)

MILD is a procedure to treat lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) by removing the excess bone or ligament tissue that are compressing the spinal nerves. It’s performed through a small incision using a specialized tool to relieve pressure and restore space in the spinal canal.

The physician uses imaging guidance to insert tools and remove the obstructing tissue. It typically takes 30–45 minutes.

Minimal recovery time with patients returning home the same day. Most patients resume light activity within a few days. Many experience improved mobility and reduced pain within a few weeks.

Minuteman

The Minuteman® procedure is a minimally invasive alternative to traditional spinal fusion, used to treat lower back pain caused by spinal instability from conditions like spondylolisthesis or degenerative disc disease. It involves placing a small spacer implant between vertebrae to stabilize the spine and reduce painful motion.

The physician uses fluoroscopy (live X-ray guidance) to insert the Minuteman implant through a small lateral (side) incision without screws, rods, or large incisions. The device is positioned between the vertebrae and helps promote bone growth and long-term spinal stability. The procedure typically takes 30–60 minutes and is often performed under local anesthesia.

Patients typically go home the same day. Recovery is generally quicker and less painful than traditional spinal fusion, with many patients resuming light activities within a few days and experiencing pain relief within a few weeks.

Kyphoplasty

A Kyphoplasty is a treatment for vertebral compression fractures, which are small cracks in the spine often caused by osteoporosis, injury, or cancer. The goal of the procedure is to relieve pain, stabilize the fractured bone, and restore normal spine alignment.

Using fluoroscopy (X-ray guidance), the physician inserts a needle into the fractured vertebra and inflates a small balloon to create space. That space is then filled with medical-grade bone cement, which quickly hardens to stabilize the bone. The procedure usually takes 30–60 minutes per treated level.

Most patients go home the same day and can resume light activities within a day or two. Many experience significant pain relief within 24–48 hours and improved mobility soon after.

SI Joint Fusion

This procedure stabilizes the sacroiliac joint (where the spine meets the pelvis) using a small implant to stabilize the joint. It’s ideal for patients with chronic SI joint pain that hasn’t responded to injections or therapy.

A small incision is made, and implants are inserted to fuse the joint. The procedure is performed under image guidance and typically takes about an hour.

Minimal recovery time with patients returning home the same day. Most patients return to light activity in a few weeks, with progressive relief as the joint fuses and heals.

VIA Disc

VIA Disc is a biologic therapy designed to treat low back pain caused by degenerative disc disease. It involves injecting a proprietary tissue-based allograft into the affected disc to stimulate hydration, repair, and regeneration of the disc tissue.

Under imaging guidance, the provider inserts a needle into the disc and injects the VIA Disc material. The procedure is quick and typically performed in 30 minutes.

Patients usually return to light activity within a day or two. Pain relief and disc health improvement occur gradually over weeks to months.
